Feline Friday: Samhain Takes Over

Not Samhain the upcoming holiday, that is, but Samhain the cat (so named because she is orange and black, like the colors of the holiday).

Speaking of orange and black, some folks from my Crystals & Gemstones class asked me to make one more necklace in the traditional "stones" of amber and jet. It's over at my Etsy shop for those who were interested, just in time for the holiday.
Here's a pic, for the curious:
Oh, and my lovely webmistress, the brilliant Annette (Jar O'Marbles) figured out a way to add the newsletter sign-up here, so it is over to the left top, should you want it.

Now, on to the important stuff--FELINE FRIDAY!!!! (Hope you have a great weekend. I'm going to be pulling out the rest of the garden, cleaning the house, and working on--redacted--writing project. Heheheheh.]

Samhain seems to think that I am for climbing on. (The angle is weird because I took the picture myself and just aimed in what I figured was the right direction.) She will actually ride around on my shoulder quite a bit, less because she adores me than because she knows Mystic the giant kitty can't get her when she's up there. Thank goodness she only weights 6.7 lbs.
If she's not riding on me, she's lying on me.

Although sometimes she just does solo cute. Could you argue with that face? Nope, I didn't think so.

Fall Newsletter Coming Soon!

It is almost time for my (coff) quarterly newsletter, which sometimes comes out three times a year. Anyway. I have a number of big things to announce, as well as a giveaway to celebrate them, so I'll be putting out a newsletter in the next week or so--maybe sooner, if I get the go-ahead to reveal my various bits of news. (Maybe a little later, if I have to wait for one.) And of course, I'll announce it all here too, but the folks who get my newsletter will find out first, about a day before I put it up everywhere else. If you want to make sure you don't miss the news, and you haven't signed up for the newsletter yet, just go to my website DEBORAH'S WEBSITE and click on the "sign up for newsletter" in the upper left corner. Don't worry--I'll never give your info away to anyone else! And as you can see, I don't send out the newsletters very often...

Since this newsletter will be coming out right before Samhain, I will probably include a few holiday related extras, like a recipe or two, and maybe a ritual...what do you think?

And don't forget to take the poll at the top of the page. Hint: it has something to do with one of my pieces of news.

A New Car Update: Meet Luna Caerulea

As many of you know, I got a new car a couple of weeks ago. A NEW new car, as opposed to a used new-to-me car, for the first time ever.

I asked my blog readers to help me name her, and got a lot of great suggestions. After taking some time to get to know the car, I have decided to go with Danyelle's idea: LUNA CAERULEA
Luna Caerulea is Latin for "blue moon" and not only is the car blue, but if you look closely at the license plate above, you will see that she already has her name on her. [The blumoonc on the plate is actually in honor of Blue Moon Circle, my coven, but it still works]. Also, I love Latin, and I think the name sounds very cool. Caerulea is pronounced SER-ool-YA, in case you were wondering.

So thank you Danyelle, and be sure to email me at magicmysticminerva at yahoo to let me know which book you'd like signed and where you want me to send it.

So far, I am really liking the car. All the folks who told me they had one and loved it were right on (THANKS, REBECCA!). It drives like a dream, shifting smoothly and handling well. The hatchback, higher roof, and fold-down rear seats make for a lot of storage room. We took our first trip to the dump already and it was great. (Well, as great as a trip to the dump can be.) There are a couple of minor design flaws--there is a blind spot on the driver's side when you are trying to merge onto the highway...obviously, that's Not Good. Someone suggested adding a small "fish-eye" mirror to the bottom of the side mirror, and I'm going to look for one of those and try it. There's also a large raised knob on the dashboard (for temp control) that is placed where you are likely to periodically whack it with your hand when you shift. *eyeroll* Clearly, the engineers who designed it never sat in the damned car. And there are a few annoying pre-programmed automatic door locking issues. These can be fixed by reprogramming the car, but the instructions take three pages in the manual (not kidding) and when my pal Robin and I spent 20 minutes trying to get it to reset, it wouldn't stay that way. So I'm going to have to take it back to the dealer and make them do it. Still, all in all, I really love the car, and feel like I made the right choice. Whew. [It's a damned good thing, because I am likely to have the car for at least the next 15 years!]

There was a minor upset yesterday. Believe it or not, I got rear-ended while I was sitting at a yield sign. Yes, that's right--two weeks and one day after I got the car. Fortunately, the (coff) impatient (coff--using that instead of a rude word) woman behind me only hit me going about 5 miles per hour, and the car didn't get so much as a scratch. My neck was a little sore afterward, and my nerves a bit jangled, but both Luna Caerulea and I are fine. (Thanks to a friend who made an emergency visit in the evening to do Reiki on me, the neck is much better this morning.)

THIS is why I much prefer to get used cars...ones that have been pre-dinged by their former owners, so I don't have to worry about that first dent or scratch! Which reminds me, I really need to do some protection magic today....

Which reminds me--anyone interested in a post about protection magic?

Oh, and just as a tease, I should let you know I have interesting news to announce soon. THREE pieces of interesting news (all separate), in fact. But I can't say anything quite yet...stay tuned.

Another Fabulous Weekend!

I know--it is shocking to think about it, but I actually had two weekends in a row that were not solely dedicated to writing, cleaning, tending the garden, or other "work" things. Last weekend I had a lovely Saturday visit from my friend Robin and her kids, Sophie and Nate. (You remember the pumpkin decorating, right?)

This past weekend, I got a spur-of-the-moment visit from pals Terry and Glen. Terry and Glen used to live here in Oneonta, many years ago. Terry and I went to the same college and took a bunch of the same classes. My boyfriend at the time was in Germany studying for his Masters, and Glen was in the Army, stationed in Alaska. Terry and I became bosom buddies, something that never changed over the years, despite their eventual move to Connecticut. Terry is a big-deal in business now, and Glen is a social worker, but they are both some of the nicest people you could ever hope to call friends.

We didn't do anything special, really--went into town so they could visit the shop
drove around town to see their old stomping grounds, enjoy the scenery (Oneonta has some amazing old houses), and admire the colors of the changing leaves. Then we went out to a lovely dinner, came home and...yes, you guessed it...decorated pumpkins. What can I say? I had so much fun doing it with Robin and the kids last weekend, I've decided it is a theme for the season. You walk through my door, you color a pumpkin.

You can't tell we were having fun, can you?

There is nothing like spending time with the people you love. What did you do this weekend that brought you joy?

Spiritual Fall Cleaning

Yes, you read that right—I said FALL cleaning. I know we usually talk about spring cleaning, and in fact I have written articles and given classes that focus on what I call “Spiritual Spring Cleaning.” But in the last few years, I find that I am more likely to do my big cleaning and clearing push in the fall instead.

There are a couple of reasons for this. For one thing, here in the cold and snowy Northeast, we tend to get stuck in our houses a lot during the winter. [There are people who actually go outside for such winter sports as skiing and skating. Please see “cold and snowy” above for why I’m not one of them.] If I am going to spend all that time in my house, I like it to be clean and neat, and have good energy.

But it also seems to me that clearing and cleansing and protection work fit well with the waning energies of the season. In the fall, things are slowing down; the nights are longer and the days shorter, there is less light. All around us, the natural world is dying off or getting ready to slow or cease production—leaves fall from the trees, gardens get put to bed, birds fly south for the winter. This makes it a good time to make your own “nest” ready for the quieter, darker, colder months to come.

I like to start by clearing away “crap.” Each of us has a different definition of crap, of course, and I’m not suggesting that you toss your collection of vintage bottle caps if it you have a deep, emotional attachment to it. I’m talking about the accumulation of useless stuff that most of us have lying around—things we meant to sort through and throw away, but never got around to. Old paperwork, letters and cards from people you don’t even remember, clothes you never wear, tools you never use; you know what I mean. Start by doing a clear-out. Throw things away, donate them to the needy, find a friend who will actually use whatever it is. (For instance, when I started going through the room where I store most of my craft and Craft supplies, I discovered I had enough candles stowed away for three or four lifetimes. So I let the folks in my group pick out the ones they wanted, and brought the rest to the Salvation Army.)

Once you’ve cleared out the clutter, and organized whatever is remaining, then it is time to do the big fall clean and cleanse. If you want, you can start with yourself. Take a ritual bath or shower and wash away the busy, hectic summer season that lies behind us. Maybe do a fast for a day, or take a couple of days to just eat really healthy to prepare your body for the tougher winter months. Fall is the perfect time to do this; since there is such an abundance of wonderful fresh fruits and veggies, you can eat healthy with virtually no effort at all.

Then clean and cleanse your house. I took a good look at my broom (my regular cleaning one, not my magical one) and realized that it was over ten years old and falling apart. So the first thing I did was to buy a new broom, and consecrate it for cleansing work. Then I went through the house from top to bottom and swept every room, being mindful of not just sweeping away dirt, but negative or stagnant energy as well. I finished up by going through the entire place with a sage smudge stick and a salt and water mixture, clearing and cleansing all the places (like windows and doors) where energy can come and go.

Fall is also the time I do my yearly protection work on my house. I make up a mixture of sea salt, basil, sage, garlic (just a token amount if I’m using it inside) and a pinch of cayenne pepper. This year, I added some charcoal from the Midsummer bonfire, for an extra boost, as well as some magical protection oil I’d made up previously. You can add anything else that you like that is protective in nature. I go around the outside of the house, paying special attention to doorways, and then I go around the edges of my property (which isn’t very large). I ask that the house and those who live there be protected from anything harmful, whether intentional or accidental, and I focus all my energy on placing the house and property within a protective bubble. If you are in an apartment (or a neighborhood full of nosey people) you can always do this inside instead of outside. [Don’t forget your mailbox, since lots of things come into your house that way.]

When I’m done, the house is neater, the energy clearer, and I feel ready to settle in to my “inside” time of year, without the baggage left over from the previous, more active seasons. Of course, come spring, I’ll do another cleansing to prepare for that energy, but for now, I can sit on the couch with a cat (or three), a mug of mulled cider, and a good book. Who could ask for more?

Feline Friday: A Confluence of Cats

A confluence is a gathering or coming together...sometimes of rivers. In this case, of cats. Usually 5 doesn't seem like a lot, because they tend to be spread out through the house. Every once in a while though, you catch a bunch together...

This week's update first, though: I've finished my revisions on Baba Yaga 2 and sent them back to my agent Elaine for her input. After that, they go off to my editor at Berkley. Whew. (Of course, then Leis will want me to do more edits, but that's for another day.) And I've started work on an interesting new project that I'll tell you about next week, and a Cool New Project that I can't tell you about yet. But I promise, you'll be excited when I can.

In the meanwhile, I'm excited, because my next Llewellyn book THE WITCH'S BROOM is up for preorder at Amazon! Whoo hoo! It isn't out until April, but feel free to run over and order your copy now. In case you missed the cover reveal, this book probably has my favorite cover evah!
As you can see, there is a fabulous cat on the cover. Let's just say that Magic the Cat approved this message..

I'm still getting used to the new car, and trying to figure out her name.

Happy Friday, all!
