Back a ways, before Stuff Changed, I had plans to give a number of online witchcraft and writing classes, just as Heather and I did the last couple of years. The one that most people seemed the most excited about was the new, "Crystals & Gemstone Magick" class. As many of you know, after signing the book contract with Berkley earlier this year, I had to make the tough decision to give up the classes after this year--at least until I could figure out exactly how much time and energy was going to have to be devoted to my new obligations.
The only class still on the schedule for this year is that Crystals & Gemstone Magick workshop, which in theory will run for three days in September, the 23-25th. (And cost $15, like most of the others.)
What I need to know from y'all is if people are still interested in taking it. If enough folks are, I will happily give the class, but I don't want to take the time to write up an entirely new workshop if no one really cares.
SO....there is a simple "yes" or "no, thanks" poll posted at the top of the blog, which will be open for the next few days. Please let me know (and you can also comment if you have something to day) if you want to take this class. My last. (Sniffle.)

Upcoming Classes: Witchcraft 201
For those of you who are interested in the classes I am giving, the next one up is Witchcraft 201, which is a more advanced workshop for those interesting in delving more deeply into the study of modern witchcraft (either for personal use, or as writing research). Here is the course description:
Also up in March, the Sabbats (Wheel of the Year) class continues with a look at Ostara, the Spring Equinox. This is a continuing year-long class that covers all eight major Pagan holidays, starting with Imbolc, which was posted last month. You can join in at any time, since the information will be available until the end of the year for any holidays you might have missed earlier. The class is a single post for each sabbat, which includes an in-depth overview of the holiday, plus a ritual, and even a recipe or two. [Note: Heather Long and I are co-teaching this, taking turns. This is great, since you get more than one point of view! We are also co-teaching the 201 class, simultaneously.]
Classes are taught online, and payment is through Paypal. Invitations to the class loop are sent out a couple of days before class starts. Invitations to the sabbats class will go out right away, since it is ongoing.

Introduction: Discussion, open forum for ideas, guidance and
exploration. Wicca is not a complicated religion, the tenants of that
religion are simple, direct. However, `advanced Wicca' is not an
introduction into the Wiccan Rede or even how to cast a circle, although
we can certainly discuss that. Advanced Wicca is about integrating your
spirituality into your daily life, it's taking the essentials and
boiling them down to the essence that is vital to your personal
practice. Lessons will include discussion about specialization.

This class takes many of the basic concepts introduced in 101 and 102,
expands upon them and develops them further. This class is useful for
writers who are doing research about Wicca, but does not generally
include writer specific topics. This class is designed to help seekers
increase their understanding as well as integrating spirituality and
Wiccan choices in day-to-day life.

Witchcraft 101 and 102 Class Coming Right Up!

When I gave these classes last year, I did them as separate workshops, for $15 each. But since virtually everyone who took 101 also took 102, I thought I'd cut people a break this year and I'm giving them together as only one class, for the bargain price of $25. *pauses for cheering to die down*
These classes are designed to give basic info on the practice of modern witchcraft, and then to delve a little more deeply into that practice. They're great for anyone who is considering following a Pagan path, or who has just started out and would like to learn more. It is also perfect for writers who have witches (whether realistic modern witches or paranormal "magic" witches) as characters, and need to find out how to make them more realistic. If you are just curious, that's okay too.
The classes start next Monday, the 25th and run for 5 days, through March 1st. Sign-up closes Sunday the 24th at 6 PM EST, so sign up now! Register for the classes
You can also still register for the ongoing "Wheel of the Year" class that covers all the Sabbats (holidays) in the Pagan year. The next one up is Spring Equinox, otherwise known as Ostara. Find out where Easter eggs really came from :-) This class will be given on a special loop, and will be taught by both me and the fabulous Heather Long. All the information will be available until the end of the year, so if you missed the first class, you can still catch up. The ongoing workshop is $40 for the entire year (with 8 Sabbats, that's only $5 a class!) with an information-packed post for each holiday that includes the basics, a ritual, and even a recipe or two.

New Year! New Classes! New Schedule!
New Year! New Classes! New Schedule!
The first: Celebrating the Wheel of the Year is based on the special request for a year long class that looks at the 8 major sabbats. This class has a one time registration fee, but once you are registered, you will receive updates around the major sabbats, including information, rituals and more. This class will include some info from my books, a ritual for each holiday, and extras like decorating suggestions and more. There will only be one post per holiday, but you can ask questions both before and after the sabbat.
The second class kicks off in February - a week long class combining Witchcraft 101 and 102. This is a great class for beginners, curiosity seekers, writers looking for research material and will have more in depth information for practitioners and more!

Last Workshop of the Year!
I can't believe it, but this month's class over at the Witchcraft and Writing Workshop loop
is the LAST ONE FOR THE YEAR! When Heather Long and I started this endeavor at the beginning of this year (mostly as an experiment, because people had been asking me to give classes on witchcraft for Wiccans and authors for ages), we weren't sure if there would be enough interest to keep it going.
To which I simply say...boy, were we wrong! The participants have been enthusiastic, fun, smart folks, and I have been having a great time giving the classes. But we are heading into my crazy time of year, when I need to focus on finishing the current novel, making jewelry to sell at the holiday season, and running The Artisans' Guild. So the upcoming class, which starts on the 29th, is the last one for the year. Based on how many people sign up for this one, we'll decide how many workshops we want to try to give next year.
Registration closes at 6 PM sharp, EST on Sunday 28th, so go to the link above and register NOW. *taps foot* No, really, I'll wait :-) I'd love to see the class fill up by the end of the day.
Oh, and did I mention that I'll be GIVING AWAY a signed copy of the Everyday Witch Book of Rituals to one lucky class participant? (Considering that the book costs more than the entire class, that's a pretty good deal!)
And don't forget, you still have a few days to enter my BIGGEST CONTEST EVER. You can come back every day and click on a couple of the options more than once. Witchcraft for the Paranormal Author class
A number of years ago (I don't remember how many), someone (I don't remember who...but I think it might have been the lovely folks from the Low Country RWA chapter) asked me if I would be willing to come up with an online workshop for fiction authors who were writing about witches and wanted some factual information to help them make their characters more accurate.
The result was the "Witchcraft for the Paranormal Author" class, and that was the beginning of my online workshop-giving career. That class is still my most popular one, and I've given it on various loops across the interwebs, including the FF&P (Fantasy, Futuristic & Paranormal) RWA chapter, where I was thrilled to have one workshop go-round attended by both Katie MacAlister and Linda Wisdom--multi-published authors whose work I like a lot.
I'm not giving that class, or any others, on other folks loops anymore, because they usually last about 3 weeks, and I just can't spare the time from my writing. Instead, I'm giving shorter classes on my own workshop loop (set up by the fabulous Heather Long).
As an experiment, I'm going to try giving the Witchcraft for the Paranormal Author class there too...in 5 days, instead of 3-4 weeks. Gulp. If you haven't taken the class yet, and you have any interest in writing paranormals that contain witches or other magical folk, I hope you'll join me!

Recommended Reading—The Garden of Happy Endings
Periodically I like to choose
from among the best books I’ve read recently and share them with my readers.
I’m a big advocate of spreading the word about great writers and great writing.
The last couple of months, I have been truly amazed—almost everything I read
was so great, most of the books made it to this list. Over the next couple of
weeks, I’ll talk about my favorites in more detail than usual—because they
deserve it. I hope you’ll check some of them out.
One of the books that really
stood out was THE GARDEN OF HAPPY ENDINGS by Barbara O’Neal. I discovered
Barbara through another author I love, Jennifer Crusie, and immediately ran
through everything she’d had published under that name. [She also writes
romance under her own name, Barbara Samuel.] I suppose these books would be
classified as “Women’s Fiction,” but frankly, I think they are in a genre all
their own.
The book blurb says: “In Barbara
O’Neal’s novel of hope and renewal, two very different sisters discover that
life is like a garden: tend to it daily, nourish it with patience and optimism,
then watch the beauty unfold.”
The beauty is interspersed with
darkness, and the hope with tragedy. This is not an easy book to read, although
the writing itself is lyrical and flows smoothly. Reverend Elsa Montgomery struggles
with a crisis of faith after a terrible incident, and her sister Tamsin’s world
is shattered when she discovers that her husband is a criminal. But there is
also gardening, and community, and faith, and friendship, and love.
This book is a treasure: a feast
for mind and heart and soul. Harsh, vibrant, gentle, loving…its spirit will
resonate in my bones long after the words have faded from memory. It may be a
novel, but it is not a work of fiction. Just the opposite, for it contains the
essence of all that is real and true about life. Including, of course, a
difficult, believable, and ultimately satisfying tale of love.
If you read one book this
summer, make it this one.

Teaching, Learning, and Paying It Forward
Here's a little-known fact about me: for a while, I was actually a certified Secondary English Education teacher. (That's right, take a moment to envision me with my hair in a bun with a pencil stuck through it. Got it? Okay.)
My original college education was in Psychology and Theater (a good background for writing rituals, when you think about it), but a number of years later, I went back and got my certification to teach middle and high school English. I did my student teaching with the seventh grade, and no one was more surprised that me to discover that I absolutely loved teaching. A number of different things conspired to send me down a completely different path, but here we are, LOTS of years later, and somehow, I've come back around to teaching again. And yes, I'm still loving it.
I started out teaching a couple of popular online writing classes, including Beyond Fangs: Creating New & Interesting Paranormal Characters, which I'll be giving for the last time (for a while, anyway) over at the Savvy Authors site April 9-26. Then, this year, I gave in to the folks who'd been nagging me (you know who you are!) and started my own Workshop Loop, where with the help of fellow author and pagan Heather Long, I give classes on Witchcraft, and the occasional writing seminar.
I'm having a great time giving the classes, and it earns me a bit of money on the side, which is always useful (especially when you need new brakes for the car and a new washer in the same month), but that's not why I do it. In fact, the teaching really cuts into my personal writing time, and takes a lot of energy.
So why do I do it? Two people, really. My grandmother (Germambie, someone I've talked about here before) was a life-long learner. She was auditing classes into her 80's, just because she loved to learn.
And Candace Havens . Candace is an author who goes out of her way to teach others, both by giving workshops, and by hosting others on her Write_Workshop loop. When I was just starting out writing fiction, she took the time and energy to mentor me--giving me a much needed (and much appreciated) boost when I had SO much to learn.
She also strongly advocates paying it forward: if someone does something good for you at the beginning of your career, she thinks it is important to pay that forward to others when you are further along the road.
So I teach because I enjoy it, but also because I think it is important to keep learning (and I learn something from my students in every single class I teach). And because it is my turn to pay it forward.

Many of the folks who took that one immediately signed up for the next one, which means I must be doing something right :-)
The next class up is "Spells and Spell Casting," and it is aimed at those who want to know how to write and cast spells, cast them better, or learn the basics so that a character can cast them. (For the writers in the gang.)

New Witchcraft Workshop Loop--A Happy Report
As many of you know, I just started a new online workshop loop (with the invaluable help of author/Pagan pal Heather Long, who is much better at the techy stuff than I am). The goal was to provide a variety of Witchcraft classes--from intro to advanced, and everything in between--and a sprinkling of writing classes, many of which are aimed at the paranormal author. [That is to say, an author who writes paranormal-themed books, not an author who IS paranormal. Although those folks are free to come, too. Snicker.]
We just finished up the first class, an "Intro to Modern Witchcraft" basic. And I am happy to say that it was a HUGE success, far exceeding my expectations. We had 36 participants (including one who was given a scholarship due to circumstances--so if you ever REALLY want to take a class, and can't afford it, feel free to contact me and explain why--I'll probably give away one freebie either by contest or gift for each class). There was a tremendous amount of participation, with the "students" often offering information to each other, which I love. Everyone seemed to get what they were looking for, which isn't always the case. And a number of the folks who took this class are already signing up for the next one, on Spell Casting, which is very encouraging.
Heather and I are still looking at how we are going to run the loop on a long-term basis. We will probably give workshops 9 out of 12 months (we're both too busy in July, November, and December) and most of the classes will be led by me, with the occasional "guest lecturer" like Heather herself, and maybe some other Witches or authors. Some classes (like the "Intro" one) will probably be given once every year, while other will be one-off offerings.[Even when there is a guest teacher, I will still be around, adding my 2 cents and helping with questions when I can.]
So--a big thank you to all who took part this time around. You really know how to make an author and a Witch happy.
And if you didn't manage to attend this time, let me know if there is a class--or a guest teacher--you would particularly like to see in the future.

New! My Own Witchy & Writing Workshop Loop
As many of you know, I have been giving online writing classes for the last few years, usually on loops run by RWA chapters such as the Fantasy, Futuristic, and Paranormal Chapter or the Low Country RWA. I've also done quite a few on Savvy Authors (and will be giving my only regular online writing class there in April). My most popular classes have been "Witchcraft for the Paranormal Author" and "Beyond Fangs: Creating New & Interesting Paranormal Characters."
I think I see a trend here...
But lots of the folks who follow me aren't writers, and there have been numerous requests for me to give classes about Witchcraft, too. *Bows in the general direction of the internet* So, with the help of the wonderful Heather Long (another great author and fellow-traveler at many a blog and loop), I have finally started my own workshop loop, "Deborah Blake Witchcraft and Workshops."
This loop will be dedicated to short workshops (usually 3-5 days in length, since the regular online classes run 2 1/2 to 3 weeks, and take way too much time away from my writing) on the topics of Witchcraft and writing. Most of the classes will be given by me, but there may be the occasional guest teacher as well. We'll be starting out with the requested basic Witchcraft classes, and if those are successful and there is enough demand, I'll add in some advanced Witchcraft, and maybe an abbreviated version of my writing classes as well.
There's even a blog for the workshop here http://witchywritingwithdeborahblake.blogspot.com/ which will give you the latest info, as well as links to sign up and pay for the classes, if you are interested in taking them. Most classes will cost $15. I might even occasionally run a contest to give away a spot, if y'all are nice...

Booksigning tomorrow! And editing workshop Nov 1st!
Hi All!
Just a quick reminder that if you live in the Oneonta area, I'd love to have you join me at the Borders bookstore at the Southside Mall on Rt. 23, from 2-4 on Sunday the 31st. I'll be doing a booksigning, and starting the fun at 2 with a scavenger hunt (there will be two winners--one gets a signed book, and the other a basket of assorted goodies including a signed cover flat!). I hope to see you there...mostly so I'm not standing around talking to myself and looking silly :-)
Also a reminder that if you haven't signed up for my "Editing As You Go: How and why to edit as you write the first draft" mini-workshop at SavvyAuthors.com you only have until the end of the day tomorrow (the 31st) to do so, since the class runs from Nov 1st-6th. The Creativity Cauldron!
A strange thing happened on the way to my last workshop...
Well, really, it happened with my first workshop too.
We had a great bunch of folks for the "Witchcraft for the Paranormal Author" class I gave last October at the LowcountryRWA loop. Enthusiastic, willing to help each other, lots of intelligent comments...just wonderful. And when the class was ending, a number of the people who took the workshop asked if I would consider starting a loop to keep things going.
I said no.
Well, what I said was, "No, thank you so much--but I'm really too busy."
And then as the end of the "Beyond Fangs" class was drawing near, I got the same request. People said they loved the way I interacted with the class and facilitated the conversations. They said it was a great bunch of people--helpful, all working on improving their (paranormal) writing. That there was something here that they hadn't found on other loops. Pretty please.
So I thought about it, and finally said, "Yes, if someone will agree to administer the loop." And the fabulous Holly said yes (with a little help from Mary in Oz). And so the Creativity Cauldron was born.
It is a place for those who write any form of paranormal (we have a few SF folks, too, and even Middle Grade and Ya writers) who want to work on improving their writing skills, have others to bounce ideas off of, and generally be supportive and supported by a small but enthusiastic community. We have those just starting out, and those who are multi-published. We do mini-workshops, writing challenges, exchange critiques and information about things like workshops. The only real rule is "play nice."
