Roof & Garden Update #1

Yes, yes, I know...you were hoping for something a little more glamorous...sorry, this is about as glamorous as it gets, at the moment. Well, all right, ever.

In writing news, the novel I was working on, SEEDS OF CHANGE, is officially out on submission. (That means my agent has sent it to a number of lucky editors, all of whom will love it. Right? Right?)

Needless to say, this can be a little nerve-wracking, so I have done what all good authors do under these circumstances: lit a candle, said a prayer, and then started the next book. Not only does this mean you have the next book ready, whether or not your first (or second, or third) one sells, but it also gives you something to think about besides "OMG--do they like it????"

In the meanwhile, back in the back yard, work proceeds apace on the new barn roof. For those of you who didn't guess correctly (which would be all of you--lol) the metal roof of the barn is....RED. (Really, have you not been paying attention? Red chair. Red pillows. It is the year of red, people. Man, it's a good thing this blog is graded on a curve. I'm just sayin'.)

My "rent-a-husband" George is doing an amazing job. He's half done already.

 Doesn't it look great?

And I've finally gotten the garden in (the last of the tomatoes and herbs went in today), as well as about 85% of the weeding. You never get 100% of the weeding done because, y'know, they keep coming back. *sticks out tongue at weeds*

But it is looking pretty good, I think.

That amazing tall stuff in the back left corner is garlic, in case you were wondering :-)

Do you garden, or have an indoor green thumb? If so, what is your favorite thing to grow?

  1. Ooo! Nice raised beds! In our next garden, we're so doing raised beds. It's really too late for this one. Right now my favorite garden thing is the bok choy, the sugar snap peas, lettuce, arugula and raspberries. Later I'll start in on the tomatoes and basil. Then there's the garlic which goes in almost everything I cook, the herbs including a massive amount of cilantro, the green beans, and later the chard and kale. And not to forget the farm stand corn, apples, strawberries and everything else we don't grow! My favorite part of all is that I don't have to do the digging and weeding - I just get to wander down and decide what's for dinner tonight!

    1. I love my raised beds, although it does mean there is a lot of space that isn't being used. Still, they have great advantages. My peas are just getting ripe enough to eat, and they are so sweet I stood there for ten minutes today just eating them in the garden :-)

  2. Looks fabulous! And so does the garden. And of course some editor is going to be very lucky to find your submission on their desk. ; )

  3. The barn roof looks great. I just thought your barn was red and wondered why you would put a red roof on a red barn! :)

Your garden is so organized! It looks beautiful. Some day I shall have a garden again and grown things. What I grow will depend on where I am. If I stay down here, it will be things like tomatoes and peppers and blueberries (which surprise me by being growable here) and citrus trees. If I move back to the PNW, it will be lettuces and kale and peas and blueberries and raspberries and strawberries and apples.

    1. The barn is actually brown and a sort of reddish-orangy-brown...I was a little worried the red roof was going to clash with that color, but it seems to be okay.

I have all the things you listed except citrus trees, which unfortunately can't be grown here :-(

  4. I want a garden. And a barn. I stay satisfied growing flowers in the beds and on the deck. Oh, and each year we buy basil plants and a tomato plant for Five because he likes to watch actual food grow.

I am sending out "Deb's book is wonderful...buy Deb's book" vibes!

  5. The barn looks good! Your husband really did a great job with the roof! Even though he did it just by himself, the roof looks like it was done by a professional. He certainly deserves a ‘job well done’ and a pat on the back for that. Just one thing though, I think he should be careful the next time, because from the looks of it, he doesn’t have much safety equipment on him, which is a must!

  6. I dunno, but after seeing the pictures, I suddenly remember Disney Junior’s “Word World”. Haha! Well, maybe because there’s also a barn house there. Haha! Anyhow, you must’ve been really grateful to have a “rent-a-husband”. Hehe! You don’t need to ask for help of an expert because he can do the job by himself. :)
